Three Ways To Maintain Calm in the Chaos

This past month has been difficult for me. We are an evangelical (Assembly of God) missionary family living in Honduras. We have lived here for 5 years and for over a year, now, we have been living in a state of political instability. Thankfully, we live in one of the cities that is less violent and the majority of what is happening in the rest of the country is not happening here.

This post is not a political post.  I'm not going to get into the details or explain what is happening. If you are interested you can google the political situation.  This post is about my personal experience of adapting and trying to maintain calm in the chaos.

By maintaining calm I mean calm on the inside. Because on the outside I can and have maintained what appears to be "peace of mind." But on the inside, I must confess it is a different story.

I have never lived in a country that is going through what Honduras is going through right now. 12 years of living in Central America (in three different countries) this is the first time I've received numerous travel alerts, there has been a curfew, national protests, at times even if we wanted to leave we couldn't because of protesters blocking the major roads.

Honestly, I don't feel scared. What I do feel is anxiety and worry.   I feel like I have to constantly watch the news so that I don't miss something. So I know what is going on and what is happening.

Something happens when you fill yourself with the news.  It is depressing, it is uncensored (here they show all the blood ect.), it is frustrating.  Living in a country going through a severe crisis is disheartening. There are so many different emotions to deal with.  This is all new for me because in the United States we are beyond blessed. I can't even begin to list how good we have it; don't take it for granted.   Yes, we have our problems and issues but not like other countries.

The people are suffering. And it seems no one in the world cares.  And as I missionary I don't know what to do. We just continue to all live our new "normal" lives.  The problems are bad here but I start to think about other countries that are so much worse. How do people survive? How do they make it?

The chaos becomes normal.  The protests are no big deal. The lack of freedom becomes bearable. The deaths are just another number.   You learn to tolerate.

Justice becomes a foreign term and partisanship is the norm.

It sounds inhumane but it's how you survive.

 God made humans incredibly resilient to the point that you can survive without God....but why would you want to?

How do you maintain calm in the chaos?

1. Limit time watching the news and reading news on social media.

When something huge has happened I want to know all the details.  There is nothing wrong with the news or using Facebook as a medium to find information but there comes a time when you need to turn it off.  Being informed is one thing and being obsessed with knowing the latest detail is another.  You will be ok if some new detail comes out and you hear about it five hours later.  Nothing will change.  The only thing that will improve is your mental health.

2.  Keep your mind busy doing other things.

When I start to feel overwhelmed or anxious because of a specific situation it's good to stay busy doing other things.  Dedicate some quality time to your kids.  Organize a room you've put off.  Start a new project.  Not only will you keep your mind busy but you are doing something productive.

3. Spend more time with God.

This may seem like a no brainer but I feel like I actually distance myself from God when there is a crisis because I stay busy filling myself with information from the news. I try to relieve my anxieties by staying informed when I need to release my anxieties to my Creator. Instead, of dedicating time to media dedicate it to the Lord.  Put on worship music, memorize scripture, read the word of God. There are so many ways to go deeper by writing the word of God, Bible journal/prayer journal, Bible studies, listening to a message. Truly we have no excuse.

These three things should be able to help you stay calm in the middle of the chaos.  Your chaos surely is different than mine but the physical and mental strain that it takes on us is the same. You can avoid social media and stay busy but if you don't spend more time with God all of it will be in vain.
