How to Bottle Wean Your Baby In Just One Week

Bottle Wean Your Baby In Only One Week- Transitioning your baby from bottle to cup in only one week is not an impossible feat. Follow my bottle weaning method for an easy way to switch bottle to cup quickly.

The thought of bottle weaning made me panic a little bit.  After talking to my mom she helped me come up with a week-long plan to transition from the bottle to the cup.

I did the exact same thing with both of my children and it worked great. If your baby is older than 6 months, however, this bottle weaning method may not work so well.  The earlier you wean the easier it will be to transition them from bottle to cup. This is not a switch from bottle to sippy cup cold turkey method.  It's more like a transition or ease the child into weaning. This method is to transition from the bottle to sippy cup within a week.

I was an exclusive breastfeeding mother. I breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months. No food, no juice, no trying anything until 6 months of age. The reason I had to wean my children is that I worked full time and while I was at work I would pump and the baby sitter gave my children their breastmilk in a bottle.

How old should a baby stop using a bottle?

I'm not sure there is an exact answer to that. I do know, however, weaning a child earlier is so much easier than doing it later.

Both of my children took three bottles during my workday.  When they turned 6 months I took half the milk from the last bottle and put half of the milk in a sippy cup or straw cup. You have to play around to see what your child likes.

My son never took a sippy cup and went straight for the straw.  My daughter would only take a sippy cup and now she drinks from both.

First feeding would be given in a bottle. The second and third feeding half the milk would be given in the bottle and the second half in a cup. It's important that the child is not starving but also still wanting to drink milk.

I also gave a few ounces of water, in the same cup, between feedings to familiarize my child to the cup.

First day- The last bottle is split in two. First half in a bottle and second half in a cup.

Second day- The last bottle was only given in a cup.

Third day- Only the first feeding was given in a bottle and the other two feedings were in a cup.

Fourth day- First feeding half in the bottle and half in the cup.  The other feedings only in a cup.

Fifth day- Repeat

Sixth day- You are giving your kid all their milk in a cup and you can wash those bottles one last time and put them away.

Once you have done this do not EVER bring the bottles back.

Side note: They don't love it, at first, but they have to get used to it. It's important to find a cup the child likes. It also may work better with someone else other than the mother doing it.  I just gave the instructions to my babysitter, since I never gave them bottles.

Don't forget every baby is completely different and it may take longer than mine did to wean but it will eventually happen. Don't beat yourself up if this doesn't work for you.
